C&I 369: Teaching Language Arts

Course Overview & Syllabus

This course is part of the Middle Childhood/Early Adolescence Education program and is taught during the first semester of practicum. It is taught in conjunction with Teaching Reading. Content covered includes the integration of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the ELA curriculum, the personal relationship between literacy and identity, critical support for digital literacies, and writer's workshop. Students also prepare for content included in the Wisconsin Foundations of Reading Test and construct and teach a lesson series aligned to the rubrics and requirements of Ed-TPA. Visit our course page to see material from the face-to-face version of this course.

Course Highlights

Blending Methods
During the latest iteration of Teaching ELA, I introduced a blended approach to better contextualize our methods in authentic classroom spaces. My overarching goal was twofold: (1) strengthen connections to students to inform culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogies; (2) use more of my instructional time to customize feedback and support for individual student growth. To support these aims, I utilized new structures within my course-planning including interactive webinars, online modules, and applied workshop experiences. Through these activities, I was able to streamline readings, rehearsals of practice, and reflections on practice within actual teaching settings. Welcome to Practicum: Making iMovie Trailers to Introduce Multimodal Composition and Genre Study
This community building activity also served as a powerful introduction to our course perspective by introducing students to multimodal composition and highlighting the structuring role that genres play in meaning-making. We may have had a little too much fun putting these together... but in the end it was probably worth it.

Writing Workshop Unit
This unit required students to work collaboratively to design and teach a lesson on an element of author's craft, including the use of a guided read-aloud of a mentor text with a follow-up writer's workshop activity. In addition to teaching a lesson to their peers, students also honed their ability to critically analyze the multiple and intertwining dimensions of lesson planning through specific perspectives. For many students, this provided a focused opportunity to really see how these aspects (such as how well their peers supported academic language, or how opportunities for student participation were crafted) appeared during the act of teaching and how they impacted the students' abilities to learn and participate in active and meaningful ways. For more information regarding this unit, you can visit our Writer's Workshop Unit page.
