C&I 463: Student Teaching Seminar for Elementary & Middle School Settings (2015)

Course Overview & Syllabus

This seminar serves as a complementary and cumulative space for students to examine, reflect upon, and continue to grow their professional roles as teachers. In addition to supervisor observations, students are supported to analyze their practice, design and provide feedback for responsive assessment, engage with parents and communities, and balance the demands and complexities of full-time teaching. Teacher candidates also complete their edTPA portfolios during this semester as mandated for teacher licensing in the state of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English Fall Convention

An extension of our program goals is to also support our teacher candidates to enter into and engage in professional communities. As such, candidates attended a local literacy conference as part of their student teaching seminar experience. A group of our students collaborated to present an innovative multiliteracies book response project which they are now working to publish in an upcoming edition of the Wisconsin English Journal. Growing their leadership skills through these ongoing activities in the field is an important part of continuing professional learning— and we are so proud of the strides our teacher candidates have already made!

Attending Teachology: Assess. Reflect. Redesign.
This fall workshop provided opportunities for students to share their ambitious designs for teaching with technology with their peers. In addition, we engaged in facilitated peer mentorship using our inductively designed "shifting mindsets" protocol. Some of the highlights included Grace Binder leading an introductory session on SAMR; Daniel Ma facilitating peer mentorship; Emily Schmitz exploring Formative as an assessment tool; Carley Varo sharing her passion for PearDeck; and Brianne Kashak and Megan Radke exploring formative assessment tools such as Kaizena and Wikispaces.
