C&I 630: Foundations of Coaching

Course Overview & Syllabus

Designed for practicing and aspiring instructional coaches, this is the first course of the Instructional Coaching Certificate program. Students are introduced to basic principles and practices for implementing student-centered coaching. The final project guides them to develop a coaching vision to implement at their sites over the course of the following three semesters. These courses can be taken for professional development credits, University credits, or as part of an approved Master's degree program.

Course highlights

Opportunities to Engage in Coaching PLC's
Participants in these courses have the opportunity to explore a paradigm shift in coaching that puts students front and center by repositioning the focus of coaching efforts on student evidence rather than teacher practice. This coaching model is grounded in collaboration and job-embedded opportunities for professional learning, and the courses provide an extended network of professionals to explore these concepts, reflect on practice, and analyze coaching moves through video and online webinars. Resources and strategies for long-term planning, collaborating with leadership, facilitating coaching moves, evaluating effectiveness, and reflecting on professional growth are integrated throughout.

Student-Centered Coaching Workshops
Courses are taught in collaboration with UW-Madison faculty from the Departments of Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. In addition, the certificate is guided by the student-centered coaching model of Diane Sweeney. Many of our students are either past or future attendees at coaching workshops Diane holds annually in Denver and Madison. Having had the chance to attend both this past year, it provides another wonderful opportunity to network and grow valuable resources and toolkits for moving forward with instructional coaching that makes a difference.
